Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Perennial herbs 5-10 dm tall.

Stems:

Roots: Roots fibrous.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite or rarely alternate. Blades deltate, elliptic, lanceolate, ovate, or rhombic Apex acute. Base attenuate or cuneate (wedge-shaped). Margins crenate, gland-tipped, or serrate/dentate.

Flowers:

Fruit: Fruit a simple; dry; achene (cypsela); brown in color; conical; turbinate (top-shaped attachment at the wide end); oblong; or obovoid 2-3 mm long x 1 mm wide; straight or slightly curved; surface ribbed/nerved; tuberculate; warty and viscid; with a persistent pappus.
